A young child was tragically declared deceased after being discovered unconscious at his residence just before 5 pm on Friday, October 3.
Authorities located the child, identified as Anthony Casey, following a 911 call from a low-cost housing complex in Brooklyn around the same time, as confirmed by the New York Police Department.
The one-year-old sustained severe blunt force injuries to his body, as determined by the medical examiner. This led to the classification of Casey’s passing as a homicide by the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, as reported by the Daily News.
Although no arrests have been made yet, the incident is currently under active investigation.
In a separate incident, a couple passed away in a scorching bath, leaving their child orphaned shortly after their birthdays. Ana Carolina Silva, aged 41, and Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, aged 37, hailing from Brazil, were discovered lifeless inside a motel bathtub where the water temperature was recorded at 50°C.
According to local media outlet Globo G1, a toxicology examination revealed significantly elevated alcohol levels and traces of cocaine. The Civil Police conducted 16 forensic tests ruling out potential causes of death such as electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or foul play.
During the investigation, law enforcement officers thoroughly inspected the motel room, the couple’s vehicle, and reviewed CCTV footage. Brazil’s Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated that “the cause of death in both cases was external poisoning, leading to heatstroke with severe dehydration, thermal collapse, resulting in organ failure and death.”
Chief of Police Felipe Simão Gomes stated that “based on the circumstances and substances detected on the bodies, the Civil Police concluded that the deaths were sudden and not the result of external interference.”
The couple, who had been in a relationship for nearly two decades, were known to be caring parents and sociable individuals according to friends. Authorities confirmed there was no history of violence in their relationship.
Concerns arose when the couple’s family reported them missing after they failed to collect their daughter. The family had recently celebrated their daughter’s fourth birthday at a food park before entrusting her to babysitters and heading to a nightclub.
After dropping off their daughter at Jeferson’s sister’s residence, the couple checked into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil shortly after midnight, according to reports.
A missing persons inquiry was initiated by the police, leading to the discovery of the couple deceased inside the bathroom. Medical professionals determined that their deaths were attributed to heatstroke and organ failure.
Investigators revealed that Jeferson, a military police officer, and Ana Carolina, a salon owner, had lost consciousness in the 50°C water while a heater was operating. Family members have raised suspicions regarding the circumstances of their deaths.
