The Police Complaints Watchdog is launching an investigation into a concerning identity mix-up that resulted in tragic consequences. The incident occurred when a 17-year-old girl driving a Toyota crashed into a tree in Rotherham on December 13th, leading to her death and the death of 18-year-old Joshua Johnson. Another passenger, 17-year-old Trevor Wynn, suffered critical injuries. Shockingly, Joshua’s family spent Christmas at the hospital with Trevor, mistakenly believing he was Joshua.
The mix-up was only discovered when Trevor regained consciousness and revealed his true identity to medical staff. This revelation came after Joshua’s family had spent weeks mourning his supposed death and making funeral arrangements. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation following the misidentification of the individuals involved in the car crash.
Emily Barry, the Director of IOPC, expressed condolences to all affected parties and acknowledged the gravity of the situation. She emphasized the need for a thorough independent investigation to determine the causes of the error and prevent similar incidents in the future. The families involved have endured unimaginable suffering, with Joshua Johnson’s family describing the ordeal as incredibly challenging.
Jonathan Stoner, who assisted in fundraising for Trevor’s funeral, recounted how the error was uncovered after Trevor regained consciousness and provided his personal details. The Assistant Chief Constable, Colin McFarlane, acknowledged the shock caused by the mix-up and assured support for Trevor and the affected families. He highlighted the commitment to understanding the circumstances leading to the error and preventing its recurrence.
In addition, an 18-year-old has been arrested for suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, while a 19-year-old faces charges of perverting the course of justice. Both individuals are currently on bail pending further investigations. The authorities are cooperating with the IOPC and have pledged to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
