Far North Queensland in Australia, with its picturesque white sandy beaches and lush rainforest-covered mountains, was an idyllic home for 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley. Toyah, an avid nature enthusiast, cherished spending time outdoors, exploring waterfalls, and strolling along the stunning coastline with her loyal canine companion, Indie.

Dedicated to animal welfare, Toyah worked at the Paws and Claws shelter in Port Douglas, where she lovingly cared for cats and dogs in need of new homes. Known for her calming presence with animals, she also held a job at a health food and pharmacy store where she was well-liked by customers. Excited about her future, Toyah was looking forward to being a bridesmaid at her best friend’s upcoming wedding and enjoyed a fulfilling relationship with her boyfriend, Marco.

Tragically, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in October 2018, Toyah went for a walk with Indie at Wangetti Beach after visiting Rusty’s Market in Cairns. Concerned when she didn’t return, Marco contacted her family, initiating a search that led to the grim discovery of Toyah’s body by her father, Troy, under a tree near the beach. The heartbreaking scene also revealed Indie tied tightly to a tree nearby.

An autopsy revealed that Toyah had sustained over 26 stab wounds, leading to her tragic death. Despite a community devastated by the loss, investigators diligently pursued leads, including DNA evidence found at the crime scene. Ultimately, Rajwinder Singh, a nurse at Innisfail Hospital, was identified as a suspect and fled to India following Toyah’s death.

After an extensive investigation spanning several years, Singh was apprehended and brought to trial, where he was convicted of Toyah’s murder. The court proceedings shed light on Singh’s motive, suggesting a potential opportunistic encounter that turned fatal. Singh was sentenced to life in prison with a parole period of 25 years, labeled a “gutless coward” by the judge for his actions.

Toyah’s memory lives on in her community, with ongoing efforts to honor her legacy, including a roadside memorial and the sharing of sunflowers, her favorite flower. The case serves as a reminder of the impact of senseless violence and the enduring quest for justice in the face of tragedy.
