A court trial has revealed that a young woman from Brazil, who had relocated to Ireland in pursuit of a better life, was allegedly strangled to death by her former boyfriend during a visit to his apartment. Bruna Fonseca, a 28-year-old university graduate, was discovered deceased at a residence in Cork city on January 1, 2023. The accused, Miller Pacheco, 31, has denied the murder charges against him. Prosecutors stated that Bruna had moved to Ireland in 2022 for improved prospects.

According to court testimonies, Bruna and Pacheco, who both hailed from the same Brazilian town, had previously been in a relationship but had parted ways, with Bruna seemingly moving forward with her life. Bruna arrived in Ireland with her niece in September 2022 and secured a job as a cleaner at Mercy University Hospital. Pacheco followed suit and found work at a restaurant in Cork city.

Despite Bruna being in a new relationship, she maintained some communication with Pacheco, who allegedly bombarded her with numerous text messages. By late December 2022, Bruna expressed her desire for Pacheco to leave her alone. The events leading to Bruna’s tragic demise unfolded during a Christmas Eve gathering and a subsequent New Year’s Event, where Pacheco’s unwavering attention on Bruna was noted.

Witnesses reported hearing distressing screams emanating from Pacheco’s apartment in the early hours of January 1, 2023. Subsequently, a chilling phone call made by Pacheco to a friend, coupled with the discovery of Bruna’s lifeless body, raised suspicions. Pacheco initially denied any involvement in Bruna’s death but later described a physical altercation where he claimed to have accidentally caused her death.

A post-mortem examination determined Bruna’s cause of death as asphyxiation. The trial, which involves a significant amount of text and call evidence, has drawn attention both locally and internationally. Pacheco, a former engineer in Brazil, is assisted by a Portuguese interpreter during the court proceedings, while members of Bruna’s family have traveled to Ireland to attend the trial.
