FIFA has hailed the World Cup draw in Washington DC as a significant step towards the finals, although the journey ahead seems fraught with challenges. The looming presence of US President Donald Trump threatens to overshadow the event, reminiscent of his previous involvement at the Ryder Cup. Unlike before when only two teams were impacted, this time 48 teams will be present, with six yet to secure a spot in the tournament. Notably, Iran will be conspicuously absent from the draw due to visa issues faced by some qualified nations’ representatives.

Despite appeals to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, including a plea from Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, only a limited number of visas have been granted, leading to Iran’s decision to boycott the event citing politicization concerns. The draw will be conducted by Rio Ferdinand, with NFL star Tom Brady among the assistants. Participating teams will finally learn their groupings and opponents, but detailed planning will have to wait as the full match schedule, including venues and kick-off times for all 104 games, will be disclosed separately the following day.

The unveiling of the complete schedule at 5 pm (GMT) on Saturday will feature FIFA legends alongside Infantino. This will be a crucial moment for team managers like Thomas Tuchel to determine their match timings and locations, emphasizing the anticipated challenges that lie ahead. The intricate process of determining teams’ group positions based on predefined allocation patterns for pots 2, 3, and 4 adds to the complexity of the draw. FIFA’s attempt to keep the top four ranked teams apart until the semi-finals, including England, indicates the competitive nature of the tournament’s knockout stages.

As the draw approaches, uncertainties and complexities loom, painting a picture of a potentially tumultuous sporting event. The anticipation builds as the football world eagerly awaits the unfolding of the World Cup journey.
