In a significant move, the traditional copper landline networks that currently hang above streets in the UK are being phased out. By January 2027, the transition to “Digital Voice” services will be complete, signaling the end of the old copper-wire phone infrastructure.
Following this deadline, households will shift to making calls through their broadband connections. This shift marks one of the most substantial changes in UK communications in years. To expedite the transition away from outdated systems, BT’s Openreach network is implementing the “Stop Sell” initiative.
Under these guidelines, providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk are no longer permitted to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas. The “Stop Sell” notifications have already been introduced in various parts of the UK, with Openreach now expanding the program to impact 238 exchange locations and approximately 1.69 million premises.
Once these changes take effect, customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or obtain new services will need to transition to full-fiber broadband and digital phone services, leaving behind the legacy copper network. Openreach has clarified that the “Stop Sell” policy is triggered when 75% of premises connected to a particular exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre, necessitating a shift to digital services over the Full Fibre network.
By early June, the “Stop Sell” regulations will be enforced across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting around 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the “Stop Sell” program in advancing the UK towards a modern full-fiber future. The focus is on transitioning people to more advanced, future-proof technologies as the capabilities of copper for modern communications diminish.
The nationwide shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is imminent, less than eight months away. This transition aims to streamline networks, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure a smoother migration to faster and more reliable digital infrastructure.
Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology for digital calling, offering modern features like Multi Call and call diversion to any phone number. Upgrading to Digital Voice for most households will not alter their phone usage habits, as the service is bundled with broadband in a single package price without any additional charges.
