Ukrainian authorities revealed on Wednesday that they are investigating high-ranking officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration. This development comes shortly after the country’s former defense minister called for national elections despite the continuing conflict with Russia’s invasion. The investigation is focused on uncovering a criminal network allegedly led by a current and former lawmaker, involving officials from the president’s office and other individuals, as per a statement from Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

President Zelenskyy has not publicly commented on the investigation but has removed Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office through a decree. This investigation poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s leadership, following previous political setbacks. The recent appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister was approved by Ukraine’s parliament, with 312 lawmakers supporting the decision.

Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, in a video address, called for elections in Ukraine, criticizing the current governance system and corruption among officials. Zelenskyy’s administration has not responded to Fedorov’s statements. The political turmoil comes amid Ukraine’s recent military successes, utilizing drone technology to target Russian oil facilities and impede the progress of Russia’s army on the front lines. However, challenges remain in peace efforts and defense capabilities.

In a retaliatory move, a Russian drone attack targeted civilian vehicles in Ukraine, resulting in casualties. The ongoing developments underscore the complex dynamics in the region amidst the prolonged conflict.
