A general practitioner has raised an urgent alarm concerning a significant cancer symptom that many women may be overlooking. This particular sign, according to the specialist, necessitates an immediate medical evaluation.

In anticipation of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, commencing on January 19, Dr. Rupa Parmar highlighted some crucial indicators of the disease to be vigilant for. She cautioned that a third of women tend to miss their essential cervical cancer screenings.

Furthermore, the most common symptoms are frequently disregarded. Among these is weight loss, which might be misconstrued as a consequence of reverting to a regular diet in January after a festive Christmas season.

Dr. Parmar, a GP and Medical Director at Midland Health, explained, “Cancer cells disrupt the body’s ability to absorb fats, proteins, and carbohydrates from food. Consequently, calories are burned at a faster rate, leading to weight loss.”

“Unexplained weight loss without an evident cause is typically the most prominent indicator of cancer and should be promptly investigated.” Nonetheless, unexplained weight loss is not exclusive to cervical cancer but is also recognized as a common sign across various types of cancers.

Cancer Research UK notes, “Weight loss is prevalent in individuals with cancer and may prompt an initial visit to the doctor.” The organization identifies lung cancer and upper gastrointestinal cancer as the most susceptible to weight loss.

Dr. Parmar also disclosed other symptoms of cervical cancer. She mentioned that vaginal dryness, infections, and skin conditions can provoke pain during intercourse. However, if pain during sex is a recent occurrence for someone who does not typically experience it, this could signal cervical cancer as the tumor develops and impacts surrounding tissues.

Experiencing three or more urinary tract infections (UTIs) within a year may indicate an underlying condition like cervical cancer. Dr. Parmar clarified that recurrent UTIs do not directly cause cancer but can serve as a symptom if the cancer has progressed and obstructed the urinary tract.

Persistent and severe lower back or pelvic pain without a clear cause could signify cervical cancer, especially when accompanied by other symptoms. As the cancer advances, the pain intensifies. Additionally, pain may escalate during intercourse, urination, or bowel movements.

Any abnormal bleeding, such as bleeding during intercourse, spotting between periods, or post-menopausal bleeding, might indicate cervical cancer. Unusually heavy menstrual flow or prolonged periods could also be red flags for an underlying issue.

Changes in vaginal discharge could signify an issue with the cervix. An increase in volume, unusual odor, abnormal color, or presence of blood may manifest if the cancer has already impacted surrounding tissues.

If any of these symptoms are experienced, seeking medical attention is advised.
