A man accused of brutalizing and murdering a British woman who traveled to the US with intentions to end her life has been engaging in distressing phone conversations with his wife from jail, according to records.

Sonia Exelby’s body was discovered in a wooded area in Marion Oaks, Florida, after she did not show up for her flight back to the UK on October 13. The 32-year-old from Portsmouth, Hampshire, had flown to Tallahessee to meet Dwain Hall, whom she had been communicating with online through a fetish website.

Concerned friends suspected Sonia, who had a history of mental health struggles, had put herself in a perilous situation by traveling to the US. Evidence found on her computer indicated her intentions to be subjected to sexual abuse, torture, and potentially murder.

Following the recovery of Sonia’s remains from a shallow grave, Florida police arrested Dwain Hall on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. Subsequent investigations revealed that Hall had made multiple phone calls and video visits from Marion County Jail, including a troubling conversation with his wife, Ginger Stein.

In the conversation, Hall expressed remorse and worry, mentioning financial pressures and the severity of the situation. Police linked Hall to transactions made using Sonia’s credit cards, with the suspect alleging that Sonia had promised him money but failed to deliver, leading to a violent confrontation.

Tragically, evidence suggests that Sonia may have wanted to change her mind but was trapped in a terrifying ordeal. Video footage showed Hall pressuring Sonia, visibly distressed and covered in bruises, to consent to disturbing acts before her tragic demise.

Messages exchanged between Sonia and a friend revealed her fear and desperation, indicating she was being controlled and manipulated by Hall. The autopsy report confirmed Sonia’s death was caused by multiple stab wounds, with severe injuries found in her torso.

Hall, who maintained his innocence through his attorney, justified his actions as an attempt to assist Sonia in her wishes. However, authorities uncovered a pattern of control and abuse leading to Sonia’s tragic death, ruling it a homicide.

Legal proceedings are ongoing, with Hall scheduled to appear in court in February. His attorney has entered a plea of not guilty, awaiting further evidence to be presented by the prosecution. Expressing condolences to Sonia’s loved ones, the attorney indicated that Hall would exercise his right to remain silent regarding the allegations.
