In the past few weeks, Iran has witnessed a wave of protests as citizens have taken to the streets to voice their opposition to the authoritarian theocratic regime in power.

Subsequent to these demonstrations, the Iranian government has responded harshly, cracking down on protesters, leading to reports from human rights organizations suggesting that more than 2,400 individuals might have lost their lives during the crackdown.

The exact casualty figures have been challenging to ascertain due to the government’s action of shutting down the internet, limiting protesters’ ability to communicate and share information.

Despite these challenges, there is optimism among both domestic and international observers that the current rule under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could be nearing its end, potentially paving the way for democracy to take root in the nation.

Renowned comedian and actor Omid Djalili, who has been a vocal advocate for Iranians living under oppressive rule, recently shared his thoughts on the situation in an interview with The Times. Omid, born in London to Iranian parents, recounted a heartbreaking incident where a friend’s brother was killed by Iran’s security forces, and the family was coerced into paying a ransom and signing a false confession.

According to Omid, the death toll from the protests ranges from a minimum of 2,000 to a maximum of 12,000, as reported by Iran International following extensive research. He also described witnessing a disturbing video online showing security forces shooting young protesters, highlighting the brutal tactics employed by the authorities.

This is not the first time Omid has spoken out about the unrest in Iran and the atrocious treatment meted out to its citizens. During an interview with Andrew Marr on LBC, he condemned the regime’s actions, labeling them as a twisted interpretation of Islam that most Muslims disassociate themselves from. Omid recounted chilling stories of families being extorted for money to release the bodies of their loved ones, including being billed for the bullets used in the killings.
