A new text scam circulating in parts of Europe is warning WhatsApp users to be cautious when receiving messages from friends asking for votes. The scam involves a deceptive message prompting users to click on links and provide personal security codes under the guise of voting in a contest.
The scam begins with a message requesting a vote for a friend’s daughter in a scholarship contest. Clicking on the link leads users to a fake website where they are asked to vote and provide their phone number and a verification code. This information is then used by cybercriminals to access the victim’s WhatsApp account, potentially locking them out and putting their contacts at risk of financial loss.
Bitdefender has identified this scam as a growing threat, with attackers using multiple fraudulent domains and URLs to target thousands of users. By tricking users into sharing verification codes, the scammers exploit friends and family to perpetuate the fraud.
Although most attacks have been reported in countries like Poland, Romania, and Germany, users worldwide are advised to stay vigilant. Bitdefender recommends precautions such as never sharing verification codes, verifying requests for money or favors through direct calls, and reporting suspicious messages within WhatsApp.
In the event of a hack, users are advised to regain control by requesting a new verification code, contacting WhatsApp support, notifying their bank of any unauthorized transactions, and informing their contacts about the breach. WhatsApp emphasizes the importance of not sharing verification codes and warns users to be cautious when receiving account registration notifications.
