A man has made a court appearance after allegedly shooting his wife in front of her children while she tried to call the police. The incident occurred on December 28 in southeast Indianapolis, Indiana, resulting in the death of Jeri Mains, 44, who succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Cecil Mains, aged 47, has been charged with murder in connection with the tragic event.
Reports indicate that Jeri’s children contacted emergency services, informing them that their father had shot their mother before fleeing the scene in his grey Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Cecil Mains was later apprehended at a junction in southwest Indianapolis and taken into custody.
According to court documents, an altercation ensued between Cecil and Jeri when he retrieved a gun from a safe after arriving at the residence earlier that day. The children witnessed the conflict, with Cecil ultimately shooting Jeri twice, resulting in fatal injuries to her heart, liver, and spine.
During police questioning, Jeri’s brother revealed previous instances of physical abuse by Cecil and his expulsion from the family home due to infidelity. The family recounted threats made by Cecil against Jeri and other family members, with Jeri’s daughter even obtaining a restraining order against her father on Christmas Day, just three days prior to the fatal shooting.
Following the tragic incident, a GoFundMe page has been established to support Jeri’s four children, aged 19, 17, 14, and 10. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed profound sorrow over the case, emphasizing the immense challenges faced by Jeri’s children in the aftermath of the devastating loss.
