A general practitioner has suggested that Britons maintain a 2-degree Celsius difference between their bedroom and the rest of their house during the winter season. This practice is believed to promote optimal sleep conditions and potentially lead to cost savings on heating expenses.

Dr. Punam Krishan, a television GP and health specialist associated with Stannah, a stairlift and home lift company, emphasized the importance of keeping the bedroom slightly cooler than the rest of the house. Maintaining a bedroom temperature of 18 degrees Celsius is recommended to signal the body’s need for rest and prevent dehydration.

Dr. Punam highlighted the significance of maintaining a minimum home temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, especially for elderly individuals. She explained that this temperature range helps regulate the body’s temperature effectively throughout the house, with the exception of the bedroom.

According to Dr. Punam, the bedroom should be cooler at 18 degrees Celsius to support the natural drop in body temperature during sleep, facilitating a restful state. This lower temperature aids in signaling the body to relax and enhances sleep quality without compromising comfort due to adequate bedding.

Dr. Punam warned against the risks of maintaining a bedroom that is excessively warm, which can disrupt sleep patterns, cause daytime fatigue, and lead to dehydration. She stressed the importance of maintaining a cool yet comfortable bedroom environment for quality rest.

For older individuals, ensuring an appropriate home temperature is crucial due to age-related challenges in regulating body heat. Dr. Punam advised regular checks on the living conditions of elderly loved ones to prevent potential health issues associated with cold indoor environments.

The recommendations align with NHS England’s guidance of maintaining a home temperature of at least 18 degrees Celsius to promote well-being. Statistics from the Institute of Health Equity indicate that a significant percentage of excess winter deaths are linked to cold indoor environments.
