At the age of 15, Walter Orthmann began working as a temporary employee and remained with the same company until he reached well over 100 years old, a significant deviation from the average UK worker who typically changes jobs every five years or so. Despite the common occurrence of layoffs, where around 45% of workers face redundancy at some point, Walter shared the secret to his 84-year job tenure.
According to Orthmann, the key to his longevity at the company was staying curious, continuously learning, and pursuing his passions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and finding joy in one’s work to make the passage of time seamless.
Reflecting on his life philosophy, Walter emphasized living in the present moment, focusing on the here and now rather than worrying about the past or future. His dedication and adaptability were evident as he navigated various roles within the textile company over the decades, from accounting to managing global supply chains.
Described as a mentor by younger colleagues, Walter’s leadership style was characterized by kindness, quiet guidance, and a willingness to assist others. His commitment to excellence and willingness to help others ensured that his company never considered letting him go, despite reaching retirement age.
Born in Brazil to German parents in 1922, Walter initially left school at 15 to support his family and joined the company in 1938 as a packing assistant. Over the years, he progressed to a sales position and eventually became a successful Sales Manager, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his work.
While Brazil’s labor laws played a role in Walter’s extended career, particularly the mandatory retirement ages set by the public pension system, his continued work ethic and passion for his job were the driving forces behind his lasting commitment to the company.
Walter passed away at the age of 102 in August 2024, having never chosen to retire, leaving a legacy of dedication, adaptability, and a passion for lifelong learning.
