A man was fatally shot by police after he brandished a bow and arrow at them. The incident occurred during a welfare check on Quia Road in Gunnedah, located about 450km northwest of Sydney, on Friday, January 16. Upon police arrival, the man initially engaged with officers outside a residence but later re-emerged armed with the weapon, targeting the officers.

In response to the threat, the police sought protection in their vehicle as the man continued to point the bow and arrow at them. Eventually, law enforcement had to discharge their firearm, resulting in the man’s unfortunate death despite immediate medical attention from NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Following the incident, a critical incident investigation has been initiated by the New South Wales Police. The State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the probe into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. The investigation process will undergo scrutiny by the Professional Standards Command and will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).

Authorities urge anyone with relevant information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or visit https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au to provide details confidentially.
