“Enormous vape kits capable of producing more than 8,000 cigarette puffs should be banned in the UK, as highlighted by a senior Member of Parliament. Dr. Beccy Cooper, a Labour MP and public health expert, is urging the implementation of the Tobacco & Vapes Bill to address legal loopholes allowing the sale of 100,000-puff vape bundles in the UK market.
The surge in popularity of these kits follows the government’s prohibition of disposable vapes in June last year. Dr. Cooper, who represents Worthing West, emphasized the negative impact of ‘monster vapes’ on public health, stating that these devices circumvent regulations on tank size and disposable vapes, posing significant health risks and should not be accessible in the UK market.
Addressing the issue of regulatory exploitation, Dr. Cooper stressed the importance of closing these gaps through the implementation of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. While acknowledging the potential of vapes to aid smoking cessation, she underscored that ultra-high-puff products hinder efforts towards a smoke-free Britain.
Current UK regulations limit individual vape tank capacity to 2ml of nicotine e-liquid. However, concerns have been raised by advocates as some manufacturers are seemingly skirting these rules by incorporating multiple 2ml tanks in a single vape device for users to interchange.
Prior to the ban on disposable vapes, studies indicated that mega-puff devices accounted for a significant portion of the market, with three million weekly sales. There was also a 17% increase in value sales of vaping devices claiming to offer over 600 puffs between June and October last year, as reported by Better Retailing.
Material Focus, an advocate for circular economies, has cautioned about the affordability of ‘big puff’ vapes compared to disposable options. The organization previously warned of an impending “vapocalypse” post the single-use vape ban due to environmental concerns associated with these models.
The 100,000-puff vape kits, featuring flavors like watermelon ice and fizzy cherry cola, adhere to regulations by meeting reusable criteria. Notably, a single combustible cigarette yields about 10 to 15 puffs in comparison.
Critics have pointed out that inexpensive devices discourage reuse, leading consumers to opt for new purchases, contradicting the purpose of the disposable vape ban aimed at reducing litter and waste of critical minerals.
While vaping products have been touted as aids for smoking cessation, their long-term effects remain uncertain. Health experts caution non-smokers and minors against vaping, emphasizing the need for further research into the safety of E-cigarettes.
The ongoing Tobacco and Vapes Bill in the House of Lords will prevent individuals born on or after January 1, 2009, from purchasing cigarettes in the future.”
