A tragic incident in the Mawgan area of Helston resulted in the death of a man when a tree fell on a caravan during Storm Goretti in Cornwall. The man, in his 50s, was found deceased within the caravan. Emergency services responded to the scene on Thursday evening.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the man’s death is not considered suspicious, and his next of kin have been notified. The Met Office issued a rare red wind warning for parts of the South West on the same day, with amber and yellow alerts for snow, ice, wind, and rain in effect across the UK.
Efforts were made on Friday to safely remove the fallen tree and conduct further investigations at the site. Despite the tragic outcome, authorities are not treating the incident as suspicious, and preparations are being made for the coroner’s file.
Yellow warnings for snow and ice remain in place across various regions of the UK. The Met Office predicts improving conditions with intermittent sunny spells on Saturday. However, wintry showers, including snow on elevated areas, are expected in northern regions and Wales.
Although a brief period of calmer weather is expected on Saturday, another front approaching from the west on Sunday may bring disruptive snowfall to Scotland and northern England. The Met Office anticipates 2-5cm of snow accumulation at lower levels and up to 10-20cm on higher ground. Central and southern England and Wales are likely to experience rain on Sunday.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington warned of ongoing disruptions due to the snowfall, especially in areas already affected by severe weather. The weather outlook suggests a wet Sunday for many parts of England and Wales.
