A couple volunteered to engage in sexual activity while undergoing an MRI scan for scientific research purposes. Ida Sabelis and her partner, Jupp, provided valuable insights into the physiological changes that occur during sex, revealing intriguing findings that puzzled experts. The study, published in the British Medical Journal in 1999, highlighted that MRI imaging of male and female genitals during intercourse is feasible and enhances anatomical understanding.

Notably, the research indicated that the penis assumes a boomerang shape with a significant portion consisting of its root during missionary position intercourse. Additionally, observations revealed alterations in the uterus and vaginal wall length during female sexual arousal. Surprisingly, the uterus size did not increase during arousal, adding a layer of complexity to the study’s outcomes.

Despite the informative results, a perplexing discovery emerged. In the study involving eight couples and three single women, it was consistently observed that the women’s bladders rapidly filled during sex in the MRI machine. Speculations arose regarding this phenomenon, with Menko Victor ‘Pek’ van Andel proposing a theory suggesting that the bladder filling post-sex could be evolution’s mechanism to prompt urination and potentially prevent urinary tract infections.

Ida emphasized that the MRI experiment, although not romantic, was driven by a desire to advance scientific knowledge about the female body, aligning with her advocacy for women’s rights. Describing the experience as an “act of love and a performance,” she underscored the significance of broadening scientific understanding in medicine and research.

While the MRI study yielded safe and valuable insights, a cautionary tale emerged from another incident. A young woman experienced severe injuries when a metal-containing sex toy, mistakenly left inside her, reacted adversely during an MRI scan, causing it to migrate through her body. This incident prompted warnings about avoiding metal objects during medical scans to prevent similar mishaps.

Following the incident, a social media user shared the story online, cautioning against wearing inappropriate items during MRI appointments. The incident underscored the importance of adhering to safety guidelines during medical procedures to prevent unnecessary risks and complications.
