UK’s Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, affirmed that the UK’s stance on Greenland remains firm and not up for negotiation, despite recent threats from Donald Trump.
In response to the US President’s warning of imposing 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, for opposing his territorial ambitions, Nandy reiterated the UK’s opposition. However, she emphasized that the UK would not engage in a verbal conflict with the US and escalate tensions.
Keir Starmer publicly criticized Trump’s decision to levy tariffs on NATO allies as “completely wrong.” Nandy echoed these sentiments, stating in an interview with the BBC that the discussion around tariffs was misguided, unproductive, and detrimental.
Nandy further emphasized on Sky News that the UK’s position, as articulated by the Prime Minister, is that Greenland’s future should be determined by the Greenlandic and Danish populations.
Recently, the UK deployed a military officer to Greenland as Denmark bolstered its military presence in the Arctic and High North.
Trump threatened to impose 10% tariffs on imports from eight countries, including the UK, if they continued to oppose his efforts to acquire Greenland. He warned of increasing tariffs to 25% by June 1 if a deal was not reached.
The list of targeted countries also includes Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, due to their visits to Greenland for undisclosed reasons.
When questioned about potential retaliation, Nandy emphasized the importance of the UK’s relationship with the US and stated that the UK’s position on Greenland is unwavering and will continue to be so.
Regarding Trump’s differing stance on Greenland, there is a collective interest in collaboration rather than engaging in a war of words.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed defiance against intimidation tactics. EU ambassadors have been summoned for urgent discussions in response to the threats.
The EU’s foreign policy chief warned that tariffs could negatively impact both the US and EU economies while benefiting China and Russia. Former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas highlighted the advantage these divisions provide to China and Russia.
