However, he and his wife encountered prolonged delays at the Scotiabank Saddledome, both for entry and the show’s commencement. Walia expressed surprise at the extensive delay, estimating a total cost of about $700 for the evening, including tickets, a babysitter, and food.
Attendees with floor and lower level seats had to wait in the concourse due to ongoing setup activities at the venue. Walia noted a lack of organization and raised concerns about safety during the wait.
Initially scheduled for 8 p.m., the June 20 concert was rescheduled to 9 p.m., with the performance eventually starting at approximately 10:45 p.m. Walia lamented the missed opportunity for a full concert experience due to the delayed start.
Notably, delays at high-profile concerts have been a recurring issue this summer. Jay-Z’s final show at Yankee Stadium on Jul. 12 began after midnight, while Harry Styles’ concert in Mexico City was impacted by heavy rain.
Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl emphasized that concert tickets offer limited rights to consumers, primarily guaranteeing the seat and a show to some extent. He highlighted clauses in ticket agreements allowing flexibility for promoters in case of schedule changes, leaving little recourse for consumers in the event of significant delays.
Ashish Sharma from the Consumers Council of Canada highlighted the lack of statutory rights for concert delays and suggested the need for legislation to protect consumers in such situations. The increasing costs associated with live entertainment, including ancillary expenses like parking, food, and accommodation, further compound the impact of delayed events on fans.
While refunds for delayed concerts are not automatic, consumers may exert influence through public pressure on artists and organizers. Despite the delayed start, Walia acknowledged the performers’ efforts but expressed disappointment at the overall experience, suggesting potential compensation or credits for future events.
