American doctor Leo Bay and his family are preparing to move from their residence in Utah to Canada. Bay will be practicing as a family physician on the Sunshine Coast. After visiting Pender Harbour, they instantly fell in love with the area and decided it was the perfect place to settle down.
With eight years of medical experience, Bay has served in various roles, including as the associate chief medical information officer for remote communities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota. He will start providing care at the Pender Harbour Health Centre by the end of August, catering to approximately 1,000 residents in the coastal community.
Bay expressed his enthusiasm for the move, emphasizing the opportunity to focus more on patient care and highlighting the limitations and challenges within the U.S. healthcare system. The process of transitioning to Canada was facilitated by recent regulatory changes that allow U.S.-trained doctors with specific certifications to obtain full licensing in British Columbia without additional assessments.
The Ministry of Health in British Columbia has actively recruited healthcare workers from the U.S., with over 580 professionals, including 270 physicians, accepting job offers in various communities across the province by March 2026. The influx of new medical professionals, including Dr. Derek Williams from Montana, has significantly enhanced healthcare services on the Sunshine Coast.
The Pender Harbour Health Centre, which recently underwent renovations supported by community donations, is now set to accommodate a larger patient population with the addition of Bay and Williams. The recruitment of healthcare providers from the U.S. and other regions is helping address the long-standing doctor shortage in British Columbia, offering improved access to essential medical services for residents in need.
