Recently arriving in Saskatoon with his family in November 2023, Shantanu Datta, a father, shared a heartwarming experience about his 11-year-old daughter’s letter to Santa Claus. Despite being unfamiliar with traditional letter writing, his daughter expressed her wishes for snow in their new Canadian home. The family’s anticipation for a snowy Christmas was fueled by Hollywood depictions of winter wonderlands and the excitement of experiencing a real snowy holiday season for the first time.

As the reality of a brown Christmas loomed over Saskatoon, with little to no snow in sight, Shantanu’s daughter’s hopes for a white Christmas seemed uncertain. With climate change discussions at the forefront during the COP28 conference in Dubai, the prospect of more brown Christmases raises concerns about the future and the need for serious action to address climate issues.

Walking his daughter to school each morning, Shantanu observed deflated festive balloons, symbolizing the subdued holiday spirit in a snowless Saskatoon. Despite the playful banter with his daughter about the deflated balloons resembling “dead bodies,” there was an underlying sense of disappointment about the likely sunny Christmas ahead.

The poignant narrative captures the longing for a traditional snowy Christmas and sheds light on the impact of climate change on holiday traditions in regions like Saskatoon. As they navigate through their first Christmas in Canada, the Datta family’s experience reflects the changing dynamics of winter celebrations in a world affected by environmental shifts.
