Statistics Canada reported that shortly after the Gordie Howe International Bridge opened, tens of thousands of drivers crossed into Canada. The bridge, which links Windsor and Detroit, finally opened to traffic on July 27 following several weeks of delays. According to initial data from StatCan, approximately 18,900 trips were made by Canadian residents returning from the U.S. via the Gordie Howe bridge in the first five days of its operation. During the same timeframe, 18,100 U.S. residents traveled across the bridge into Canada.

In comparison, the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, other border crossings in the area, saw a total of 52,700 trips by both Canadian and U.S. residents during the same period. Furthermore, StatCan noted that 4,100 commercial trucks entered Canada via the Gordie Howe bridge in the last five days of July.
