Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has observed the alarming phenomenon firsthand and received reports from woodlot owners. The iconic evergreen trees, often sought after for Christmas decorations, are gradually turning red, drying out, and succumbing to the adverse effects of the prolonged dry conditions.

According to Taylor, the current situation mirrors past instances following hot and dry summers, indicating a consistent pattern of balsam fir vulnerability to such weather extremes. The drought impedes the trees’ ability to thrive, hindering their growth and vitality. Taylor’s extensive research on climate change’s impact on New Brunswick’s forests has highlighted similar die-offs of balsam firs after unusually warm and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.

The drought triggers an early halt to the photosynthesis process in the trees as a response, resulting in stunted growth. This interruption in energy production hampers their basic functions and defense mechanisms, rendering the trees more susceptible to stressors like pests and diseases. Their shallow root systems further exacerbate the challenge of accessing sufficient water during arid periods.

Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has observed the distressing effects firsthand, noting the progressive reddening and deterioration of balsam firs on his property. With approximately 100 trees already lost, McKeil has adjusted his harvesting techniques to salvage the remaining trees before they too succumb to the drought-induced damage. He emphasizes the urgency of adapting to the changing climate, foreseeing a grim fate for the species in southern New Brunswick.

Taylor emphasizes the urgent need for climate action, underscoring the balsam fir trees’ plight as a tangible indicator of the broader environmental crisis. The visible impact on the provincial tree serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of climate change, urging society to transition away from fossil fuels and adopt sustainable forest management practices. Taylor’s research aims to raise awareness and drive policy changes to mitigate the escalating threats posed by climate change to New Brunswick’s ecosystems.
