In a conversation at a gaming convention in 2012, a board game designer challenged mathematician Eric Harshbarger to create dice for determining the starting player without the risk of a tie. The objective was to expedite the game setup process. Harshbarger, a senior lecturer at Auburn University, saw this as an intriguing problem that required a non-obvious solution, aligning with his mathematical expertise.

After years of collaboration with computer scientists and mathematicians worldwide, Harshbarger and his team devised a unique set of dice known as the Go First Dice for five players. These dice ensure a fair determination of the starting player with a guaranteed winner from a single roll, addressing the longstanding challenge.

While the concept of fair dice for multiple players was quickly resolved for smaller groups, the complexity increased with five players. The team navigated various theories and designs before arriving at a practical solution with five 120-sided dice, thanks to a researcher’s input from Australia.

A breakthrough moment occurred when Canadian software engineer Paul Meyer proposed a solution using five 60-sided dice. This revelation marked a significant milestone in the project, showcasing the effectiveness of computational methods in solving intricate mathematical puzzles like this.

The Go First Dice, available for purchase, are designed to uphold mathematical fairness, though some skepticism remains regarding their practical application. Harshbarger emphasizes the precision of the dice design, attributing any discrepancies in outcomes to manufacturing imperfections rather than mathematical flaws.

The research continues as the team explores the viability of fewer sides for five-player dice sets and the potential expansion to accommodate six players. Despite current limitations in mathematical tools, Harshbarger remains open to unexpected breakthroughs, acknowledging the unpredictable yet captivating nature of mathematical challenges like this one.
