A 15-year-old animal enthusiast, Finn Holland, sprang into action when he discovered a stranded shark near his residence in the coastal community of Maces Bay, New Brunswick. Holland and his family rushed to the beach where the shark lay, seemingly injured but showing signs of life. Despite initial hesitation due to its size and weight, Holland managed to guide the two-meter, 70-kilogram porbeagle shark back into the ocean, where it swam away.
Expressing his fascination with the experience, Holland’s mother, Jill, remarked that it was typical of her son to act decisively without hesitation. Having lived in the area for over a decade, the Hollands were surprised by the rare presence of sharks in the vicinity. Shark expert Neil Hammerschlag confirmed the unusual sighting, noting that porbeagle sharks are not commonly found in shallow waters, suggesting the stranded shark might have been distressed or impacted by human activities like fishing.
Hammerschlag explained that porbeagles have the unique ability to regulate their body temperature, enabling them to navigate colder waters like those in Atlantic Canada and New England. However, their population decline due to overfishing has made such encounters increasingly rare. Although the species was declared endangered in the Atlantic Ocean in 2004, the federal government has not taken formal action to protect them.
Reflecting on the incident, Finn Holland expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support and the sense of fulfillment from helping the stranded shark.
