The Calgary Flames community mourns the loss of Peter Maher, the iconic voice behind the team’s radio broadcasts for over three decades. Maher, who passed away at the age of 79, began his tenure as the Flames’ play-by-play announcer in 1980 and went on to cover 33 consecutive seasons. Known for his enthusiastic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher’s passion for the game and his signature style endeared him to fans in Calgary.
Having witnessed the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004, Maher left a lasting impact on the franchise before retiring at the end of the 2013-14 NHL season. The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping the fan experience and describing his voice as an integral part of Flames fandom.
Originating from Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games for the CKO Radio Network. When the opportunity arose to join the Flames as their official voice following their relocation to Calgary in 1980, Maher relocated and became synonymous with the team.
Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher at the Saddledome, fondly remembered Maher as a master storyteller of Flames history. Kerr highlighted Maher’s dedication to delivering authentic and journalistic-based commentary to fans, emphasizing the broadcaster’s meticulous approach to his craft.
Throughout his illustrious career, Maher also covered six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, including Sidney Crosby’s memorable “Golden Goal.” Recognized for his exceptional contributions, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 and honored with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding broadcasting work.
Upon his retirement, Maher’s legacy was further immortalized as the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was named in his honor. Additionally, an annual award bearing his name is presented to the Flames player who exemplifies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect, reflecting Maher’s enduring impact on the team and the community.
