Actor Ben McKenzie, known for his role in the TV show “The O.C.,” has shifted his focus from Hollywood to cryptocurrency, calling it “the largest Ponzi scheme in history.” In his new documentary “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” McKenzie explores the crypto industry, highlighting how a select few insiders profit significantly while most regular investors end up losing money.
After being introduced to cryptocurrency by a friend, McKenzie, who has a background in economics, delved into the industry and was struck by what he perceived as its lack of substance. In 2022, he testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.”
While some critics argue that McKenzie’s documentary promotes negative narratives about cryptocurrency, the actor emphasizes that his stance is aimed at advocating for increased regulation to safeguard investors.
In an interview, McKenzie discussed the allure of cryptocurrency for men, particularly the narrative of attaining immense wealth effortlessly and privately. Despite losses, some investors remain steadfast in their belief in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, driven by a psychological phenomenon known as the sunk-cost fallacy, where individuals are hesitant to admit defeat after investing significant time and money.
McKenzie’s documentary sheds light on the pitfalls of unregulated cryptocurrency investments, emphasizing that while traditional financial systems have their flaws, cryptocurrencies present an even riskier alternative. The film underscores the urgency for a more secure and stable investment landscape to protect individuals from falling victim to fraudulent schemes prevalent in the crypto market.
