The study reveals that these events are contributing additional greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, accelerating climate change beyond current global estimates.

These climate “feedback loops,” where climate change triggers more carbon emissions leading to further climate change, could result in a 20 to 30 per cent increase in warming compared to current projections for this century. The study, conducted by researchers from U.S. institutions such as Stanford University, the Environmental Defense Fund, and Spark Climate Solutions, suggests that our carbon budget may be smaller than previously believed.

The findings, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, offer a comprehensive analysis of warming-induced emissions and their impact on global temperature rise. Most current climate models focus on emissions from human activities like burning fossil fuels and waste decomposition.

Canada, with a significant portion of warming-induced emissions, is particularly affected by these changes. The study emphasizes that the consequences of these changes in Canada will not only be local but will also contribute to global climate change. For instance, during Canada’s severe wildfire season in 2023, fires released an unprecedented amount of carbon, ranking them as one of the top emitters worldwide.

The study also sheds light on the thawing of permafrost in Canada, which is accelerating due to rising temperatures from global warming. The process of “abrupt” thawing, triggered by warming and extreme weather events like wildfires, exposes more carbon, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, freshwater wetlands in Canada are identified as another significant source of warming-induced emissions, particularly methane. The increased microbial activity in wetlands due to warmer temperatures is leading to higher methane emissions, which cannot be solely attributed to human activities like oil and gas production.

In conclusion, the study underscores the urgent need for further research and monitoring of these processes, especially in Canada, to gain a better understanding of their impact on climate change.
