Donna Morrissey had a moment of realization while sharing stories and drinks with her four siblings. Growing up in Newfoundland, the family dynamics led to Morrissey spending more time indoors with her mother, while her brothers engaged in outdoor activities with their father. This pattern persisted into adulthood, with Morrissey feeling she had only known one side of her late father as her brothers shared stories about him.

The outcome of that revelatory evening is Morrissey’s latest book titled “Tell It to the Water: Five Siblings Tell of Their Father’s Grief and His Struggle Back to Hope.” While the book primarily focuses on Morrissey’s father’s grief following his wife’s death from cancer, it also delves into other tragic events, such as the loss of Morrissey’s brother, Ford, in a workplace accident four decades ago.

Reflecting on the process, Morrissey admitted that writing this memoir, unlike her fictional works, stirred deep emotions, even bringing her to tears. She found it challenging to create characters who could convey the raw and personal stories shared by her siblings.

Structured with chapters narrated from the viewpoints of Morrissey and her siblings, the book required numerous conversations and clarifications among the family members to capture the essence of each story accurately. Despite occasional tensions arising from these discussions, Morrissey emphasized that the process ultimately strengthened the bond among the siblings.

Delving into the psychology of grief, Dr. Simon Sherry, a psychologist at Crux Psychology in Halifax, highlighted the enduring emotional connections individuals maintain with deceased loved ones. He noted that evolving perspectives on lost loved ones are a natural part of the grieving process.

Morrissey expressed her aspiration for the book to prompt readers to contemplate their own family dynamics and inspire those interested in documenting their family histories. She emphasized that despite the tragedies her family has faced, the shared experiences have brought them closer, making them cherish each other more as they navigate life’s challenges.

Overall, the memoir serves as a platform for introspection and understanding, offering a glimpse into the complexities of familial relationships and the enduring impact of shared stories on individuals’ lives.
