A contentious Democratic Senate primary unfolding in Michigan is seen as a battleground for money in politics, the influence of the pro-Israel lobby, and the direction of U.S.-Israel relations within the party. Incumbent Congresswoman Haley Stevens and her challenger, Abdul El-Sayed, endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, have clashed over issues such as healthcare and immigration enforcement, but campaign finances and foreign policy have taken center stage.

According to Ad Impact, over $60 million has been spent to support Stevens in this primary, with a significant portion, more than $30 million, coming from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated groups. The role of AIPAC has become polarizing within the Democratic Party, with differing opinions among party members regarding its support.

Stevens, known for her pro-Israel stance, has refrained from direct discussions on AIPAC, emphasizing her commitment to a two-state solution and representing a large Jewish population. El-Sayed, on the other hand, advocates for the end of unconditional military aid to Israel and has criticized the country’s actions in Gaza, labeling it a “rogue state.”

The primary race in Michigan has brought the debate over AIPAC’s influence to the forefront, with supporters of both candidates highlighting their respective positions on the issue. Despite differing views, the impact of AIPAC’s spending on voter preferences remains uncertain, with some experts suggesting that economic concerns may overshadow foreign policy considerations for Michigan voters.

The outcome of this closely watched race is anticipated to have broader implications for the Democratic Party’s stance on Israel and could influence future party dynamics. A win by El-Sayed could signal a more critical approach towards Israel within the Senate, while a loss may be seen as a setback for progressive ideals. The ongoing debate over AIPAC’s involvement in political races reflects a larger shift in attitudes towards Israel within the Democratic Party.
