Two RCMP officers in Opitsaht fired shots that killed a Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation man shortly after their arrival, as shared by Cpl. Daniel Macintosh during a coroner’s inquest into Julian Jones’s death. The officers had responded to a call about a woman being assaulted and confined in a home on the island.
This inquest aims to investigate the circumstances surrounding Jones’s death and provide recommendations to prevent similar incidents. It is not focused on assigning blame or criminality. Const. David Robichaud, who fatally wounded Jones, retired from the RCMP and relocated out of the province after receiving a summons to testify.
Despite an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office that did not result in charges against the officers, the inquest is shedding light on the events that unfolded at the Opitsaht residence. Macintosh described a tense situation where Jones threatened the officers after his brother’s arrest, leading to a confrontation that ended with Jones being shot multiple times.
During the ordeal, Macintosh expressed fear for his life, and Robichaud ultimately fired the fatal shots. The officers’ actions were scrutinized, with Macintosh revealing that they could have potentially used a second Taser as an alternative. Robichaud, who was already planning to transfer out of the Tofino RCMP, swiftly left the community following the incident.
The inquest will continue to delve into the details surrounding Jones’s death as new information emerges.
