A new set of measures has been introduced to safeguard women and girls, including a ban on harmful AI apps and initiatives to prevent the sharing of nude images by children. Jess Phillips, the Safeguarding Minister, emphasized the importance of these actions in combating violence against women and girls. Additionally, Lisa Squire, whose daughter was tragically murdered in 2019, expressed relief at the prospect of increased protection for young individuals.
The government has allocated £1 billion towards victim protection, focusing on enhancing support services and secure accommodation. Moreover, teachers will receive specialized training to address misogyny and educate young people on identifying and confronting risky behaviors.
Efforts are underway to prevent children in the UK from accessing or distributing explicit images on their mobile devices through the implementation of nudity detection filters in collaboration with tech companies. The prohibition of ‘nudification’ apps, which generate fake explicit content using AI technology, is another significant step in this direction.
Roxy Longworth, who was coerced into sharing intimate images at a young age, praised the proposed legislation, emphasizing the need for technology to safeguard, not harm, young individuals. The strategy includes substantial funding for NHS services supporting survivors of sexual violence and abuse, as well as the utilization of advanced technology by police forces to combat offenders.
In a statement to the Commons, Jess Phillips stressed the urgency of addressing the root causes of violence against women and girls to prevent future tragedies. The comprehensive approach to tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) was commended by various organizations, although concerns were raised about the strain it may put on existing support services.
The strategy aims to engage boys and men in discussions about responsible behavior while ensuring that survivors have access to adequate support services. However, there are calls for increased investment in specialized support services to effectively address the deep-seated issues contributing to this societal problem.
