Keir Starmer has officially named Christian Turner as the successor to Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the United States. Turner, a seasoned diplomat and former Political Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO), will be representing the UK in Washington DC, as confirmed by the government.
In a previous announcement made in May, Dr. Turner was appointed as the UK’s Ambassador to the United Nations. However, the recent decision from No10 relocates him from New York to Washington DC, where he will take on the role of Britain’s liaison with the US government.
The change follows the dismissal of Lord Mandelson as Ambassador to Washington due to revelations regarding his association with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Dr. Turner, a career diplomat, previously served as the British High Commissioner to Pakistan and held positions as an international affairs advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor under Theresa May’s tenure.
Keir Starmer expressed his satisfaction with Turner’s appointment, noting his extensive diplomatic background and the importance of the UK-US relationship. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also praised Turner’s diplomatic prowess and leadership, emphasizing the significance of maintaining the special relationship between the UK and the US.
