Shocking video captured a terrifying incident where tourists found themselves in a life-threatening situation at sea following a high-speed boat collision near a popular holiday destination.
A total of 52 individuals, including passengers and crew members, were thrown into the water when the boat they were on crashed head-on with a fishing trawler near the well-known Phi-Phi Islands in Thailand. Tragically, one tourist, reportedly an 18-year-old woman from Russia, lost her life in the tragic accident.
A massive rescue operation ensued as photos depicted the stranded holidaymakers and crew struggling to stay afloat in the sea. Eye witnesses described the chaotic and desperate scenes that unfolded near the Phi-Phi Islands early on a Sunday morning. Passengers frantically shouted and scrambled to assist their loved ones and fellow travelers in staying above water after the collision involving the Korawich Marine 888 tourist boat.
A witness recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “People were screaming and clutching onto each other, some were pulling their relatives out of the water.”
Distressing images showed heads bobbing in the water as individuals cried out for help, with the front section of the speedboat severely damaged from the impact of the crash in the Andaman Sea. Additional pictures from the scene depicted other tourists attempting to climb back onto the damaged vessel in a desperate bid to get out of the water before authorities arrived.
The incident occurred near Koh Gai Island, in close proximity to the Phi Phi Islands, in the waters between Phuket and Krabi, according to local reports. While all passengers from the distressed tourist boat were swiftly rescued from the sea and brought ashore, there were numerous injuries among the visitors, with at least one individual initially reported in critical condition and rushed to Phi Phi Hospital.
A Russian woman identified as Elizaveta S tragically lost her life in the maritime disaster, while the remaining injured individuals received medical attention from paramedics and were transferred to hospitals in Phuket for further care.
Thai authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the alarming collision, focusing on factors such as speed, visibility, and navigation practices at the time of the incident. Officials confirmed that the fishing trawler Pichai Samut 1 sustained no damage, while the speedboat suffered significant structural failure.
