The government’s aim to prevent asylum seekers from undertaking perilous journeys to the UK is shared by many, although doubts surround the effectiveness of the recent asylum and returns policy in achieving this goal.

While there are aspects of the proposals that garner support, such as community sponsorship for welcoming refugees into localities and the swift removal of those unlawfully present in the UK, concerns arise regarding the implications for genuine asylum seekers, particularly refugee children who arrive through irregular channels due to family ties or being born to refugee parents in the UK.

Criticism is directed at the government’s plan to reassess an individual’s asylum status every 30 months for up to two decades, potentially creating a divided society with those able to settle securely and those perpetually in uncertainty.

The proposed immigration measures risk fostering animosity within communities towards perceived temporary residents, with implications more stark for children, even those born and raised in the UK, who may face the possibility of being uprooted if their country of origin is deemed “safe” by the government.

The government’s argument that these policies will decrease “pull factors” hinges on the assumption that asylum seekers are well-informed about destination countries’ asylum regulations, which may not be the case. Factors like family ties, language proficiency, and existing diaspora communities play a more significant role in an asylum seeker’s decision-making process.

To combat human trafficking facilitated by smugglers, collaboration with neighboring countries is essential. Drawing from successful strategies observed during the final months of the Biden administration, the UK could enhance cooperation with EU partners, expanding initiatives like the UK-France one-in-one-out program to other EU nations to manage asylum flows effectively.

There is potential for the UK to explore the use of asylum centers in France as an initial step in evaluating a refugee’s asylum eligibility. However, any approach adopted should prioritize compassion and fairness over harshness and cruelty in addressing the challenges of asylum seekers.
