A significant transformation is underway in how UK households stay connected with their loved ones. Starting in January next year, residents nationwide will transition from traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP, a more modern system, utilizes internet connections for making phone calls instead of the outdated analogue wiring. Despite initial concerns, switching to VoIP offers numerous advantages such as improved call clarity, enhanced reliability, and added features like spam call protection and call forwarding.

Although the transition has been in the works for years, many individuals seem unaware of the impending change. According to a recent report by telecom experts at Phonely, 58.7% of UK adults over 50 are oblivious to the upcoming phasing out of traditional landlines, despite repeated industry alerts and the extended deadline set for January 31, 2027.

Phonely cautions that this lack of awareness may lead to a surge in last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations, backlogs in rural areas, and increased strain on telecommunication providers.

“With less than a year until the UK’s analogue landline network is permanently switched off, new research suggests millions of over-50s still don’t know it’s happening,” stated Phonely. As the 2027 deadline looms, experts advise against delaying the transition.

Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, expressed concern over the false sense of security created by the extension to 2027. He emphasized, “The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s still don’t know this is happening should concern everyone involved. If the majority wait until they’re forced to move, we risk chaos at the eleventh hour.”

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, highlighted the impact of these changes on older households that prioritize stability and reliability. He urged residents to consult their telephone providers regarding the switchover process, especially if they rely on landlines for social connections or safety measures.

The transition from traditional copper-based PSTN networks to digital VoIP services is set to replace analogue landlines after January 31, 2027. As calls shift to broadband connections, many individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, who heavily rely on landlines for communication and safety, face a significant adjustment.

Telecom providers are expected to inform customers directly about the switch and guide them through the necessary steps. The transition itself should not incur additional costs, with most households requiring only a broadband connection and a compatible phone for the new system.

Concerns have been raised about the reliance on internet access, especially for older consumers who are not online. Efforts are underway to find solutions for those without internet access before the 2027 deadline. Individuals worried about the change are advised to reach out to their phone providers to explore available options.
