An 8-year-old girl reported missing on tribal lands in northern Arizona has been tragically found deceased, authorities confirmed on Friday, January 16.
Maleeka Boone, last seen in the Coalmine Canyon area, approximately 240 miles north of Phoenix in the United States, was discovered according to Navajo Nation officials.
The FBI, in collaboration with tribal police, is leading the investigation into her death. However, specific details regarding the circumstances have not been disclosed by the FBI spokesperson.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed deep sorrow over Maleeka’s tragic passing in a social media video, stating that the incident has deeply affected him.
Following her disappearance, a Turquoise Alert was issued, a system designed to notify about missing Native Americans.
Arizona introduced the alert system, known as “Emily’s Law,” in memory of Emily Pike, whose remains were located more than 100 miles away from a group home she had left in Mesa, Arizona, on February 14.
The tragic death of Pike reignited efforts to raise awareness about the high rate of disappearances and violent deaths in Native American communities, leading lawmakers to amend the legislation to honor her memory.
