Mobile networks such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are taking action to prevent foreign call centers from pretending to be banks in a new effort to combat scams. These networks have committed to enhancing their infrastructure to prevent foreign call centers from falsifying UK numbers within the next year.
Scammers engage in number spoofing by using technology to hide their actual phone numbers and alter their caller IDs to appear legitimate. The new measures will ensure that calls originating from overseas are clearly identified. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) will be utilized to detect and block suspicious calls and texts. Advanced call tracing technology will also be provided to law enforcement agencies to aid in tracking down scammers nationwide.
Key industry players, including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), have joined forces to combat this issue. Recent data indicates that 96% of mobile users decide whether to answer calls based on the displayed number, with many hesitant to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.
Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the significance of addressing spoofed calls, which enable scammers to deceive individuals with false identities and promises. The government is dedicated to combatting fraud and plans to eradicate call spoofing within a year, aiming to make the UK a challenging environment for scammers.
Individuals are encouraged to report scams and fraud to Action Fraud or the relevant authorities in Scotland. If faced with suspicious calls, it is advised to disconnect immediately and verify the caller’s contact details online. Furthermore, in case of suspected fraud, individuals should contact their bank promptly and take necessary steps to secure their accounts, such as changing compromised passwords.
