This year commemorates a decade since voters nationwide participated in the 2016 EU referendum, where the UK decided to exit the European Union with a 52% to 48% split. The aftermath of Brexit has significantly influenced the country’s political landscape, leading to the departure of former Prime Minister David Cameron and influencing the tenures of subsequent leaders such as Theresa May and Boris Johnson, who both strived to navigate the departure process through Parliament.

Presently, Keir Starmer is focused on rebuilding ties with the EU. In a recent foreign policy address, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for the UK to establish a beneficial relationship with the EU, acknowledging that while Brexit represented a democratic decision, the manner in which it was presented and executed was flawed, with unfulfilled promises that continue to impact the nation.

In a move signaling closer cooperation with the EU, the UK government announced its reentry into the Erasmus+ program, enabling British students to pursue studies at European universities post-Brexit. The initiative is expected to benefit over 100,000 individuals in the UK in 2027, the program’s inaugural operational year.

Despite efforts to mend ties, Brexit remains a contentious issue, dividing opinions within the country. The Liberal Democrats advocate for stronger connections with the EU, advocating for a negotiated customs union. The push for enhanced relations with Brussels has been met with resistance, with some labeling it as a betrayal of the Brexit mandate.

A recent poll conducted by The Mirror revealed that a majority of respondents would support the UK rejoining the EU if another referendum were held. The survey indicated strong backing for reentry among younger demographics, with 86% of 18 to 24-year-olds endorsing a return to the bloc. Calls for closer ties with Europe have been echoed by the Labour Party amidst ongoing Brexit deliberations.

The question of rejoining the EU continues to stir debate within Westminster, inviting public opinion through a poll on the matter. Despite differing views, the issue of Brexit remains a complex and evolving topic in the UK’s political discourse.
