The NHS has released guidelines on how to manage flu symptoms effectively to speed up recovery. Influenza or flu is a highly contagious viral illness that primarily affects the respiratory system, including the nose, throat, and lungs.

Common symptoms of flu include a sudden fever, muscle aches, headaches, a persistent dry cough, and extreme fatigue, distinguishing it from a typical cold. Recent data from NHS England indicates that in the first week of January, an average of 2,924 hospital beds in England were occupied by flu patients, showing a nine percent increase from the previous week.

NHS England issued a recent warning stating that gatherings during the holiday season may have triggered a resurgence of winter illnesses. Professor Meghana Pandit, NHS national medical director, emphasized that the NHS continues to face challenges with a rise in flu and respiratory virus cases, along with an influx of patients with respiratory issues and injuries due to icy weather conditions.

Healthcare staff are working diligently to ensure patients receive necessary care, urging people to seek medical attention as usual and emphasizing the importance of getting vaccinated against flu for protection.

According to the NHS, flu symptoms manifest rapidly and may include similar symptoms in children, along with earaches and decreased energy levels.

The NHS recommends four key steps to aid in a faster recovery from flu. It is advisable to consult with a pharmacist for suitable treatment options. Individuals experiencing flu symptoms, especially if accompanied by certain conditions, should seek urgent medical attention either by contacting NHS 111 or booking a GP appointment.

In emergency situations where symptoms are severe, individuals are advised to call 999 or go directly to A&E. The NHS emphasizes not to drive to A&E but to seek assistance from someone else or call for an ambulance for transportation.
