In a bold move, President Donald Trump has reportedly considered offering each resident of Greenland a staggering $1 million as part of an unconventional strategy to gain influence over the island, according to reports from The Daily Mail. With approximately 57,000 inhabitants in Greenland, this proposition could cost the U.S. a significant £42.5 billion. If Greenland were to opt for U.S. affiliation, each million-dollar offer would equate to about £750,000 or €850,000.
Despite the substantial financial implications, the U.S., which allocates a substantial £595 billion to its defense budget, might view this proposal as a relatively modest expense.
This development comes on the heels of President Trump’s recent decision to retract the threatened tariffs on eight European countries aimed at exerting control over Greenland. The abrupt reversal followed his earlier insistence on acquiring the island’s sovereignty, including rights and ownership.
In a social media post, President Trump revealed that he had reached an understanding with NATO’s leadership regarding a potential agreement on Arctic security, which could ease geopolitical tensions significantly. Discussions are also underway regarding the Golden Dome missile defense initiative, a sophisticated $175 billion system that introduces U.S. weaponry into space for the first time.
During his address, President Trump characterized Greenland as a region of cold and unfavorable geography, highlighting the historical support provided by the U.S. to Europe during World War II. He emphasized the minimal nature of the request compared to the extensive aid extended to European nations over many years through NATO.
Despite hinting at the potential use of force, President Trump expressed reluctance to pursue aggressive tactics, underscoring the preference for diplomatic resolutions over coercive measures.
