Russia has initiated a second nationwide drone and missile attack on Ukraine within four days. The intense overnight assault included 300 drones, 18 missiles, and seven cruise missiles striking eight regions, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals in Kharkiv. This attack dealt a significant blow to peace efforts as the war nears its fourth anniversary.

The assault was specifically aimed at causing extreme cold-related fatalities as temperatures in Kyiv dropped to minus 16 degrees Celsius. The majority of the targets were heating systems, energy centers, and electricity substations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of internal resilience, stating, “Where Russia seeks destruction, Ukrainians unite to support each other. Continuous international support for Ukraine is essential, especially during the harsh winter conditions.”

In one tragic incident in the Kharkiv region, four people lost their lives at a mail depot, leaving several hundred thousand households in Kyiv without power. The city has been grappling with severe power shortages, with this attack causing the most extensive electrical outage to date.

Olena Davydova, 30, who had been without power for almost 50 hours, sought refuge in a government-provided temporary shelter in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district, known as a “Point of Invincibility.” These shelters offer essential supplies such as food, warmth, and electricity to the affected residents.

The recent escalation comes after a similar large-scale attack by Russia four days earlier, which also caused widespread damage. The U.S. condemned Russia’s actions as a dangerous escalation, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting Ukrainian civilians to weaken public resistance.

The conflict in Ukraine has taken a toll on civilians, with the deadliest year recorded in 2022, as per the U.N. Statistics show that 2,514 civilians were killed and 12,142 injured, marking a 31% increase compared to 2021.

President Zelensky called for expedited deliveries of air defense systems from the U.S. and Europe to counter Russia’s ongoing aggression. In response, Russian air defenses intercepted and downed 11 Ukrainian drones overnight, as confirmed by Russia’s Defence Ministry on Tuesday.

As the war enters its fourth year in February, tensions continue to rise, with the conflict originating from the Maidan Revolution and differing geopolitical ideologies between pro-Russian factions and Ukrainian forces.
