A significant shift in how many people in the UK make phone calls is on the horizon, urging homeowners to take action before an imminent deadline. The traditional copper landlines, which have served as a communication lifeline for decades, are being phased out in favor of a new technology known as Digital Voice. This upgrade harnesses broadband to facilitate calls to loved ones.

The transition is not only necessary to keep up with modern demands but also promises enhanced reliability and introduces new features like clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Scheduled to take effect from January 2027, this major overhaul has prompted BT to launch a campaign, spearheaded by Clare Balding, called ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’ to prompt households to verify their landlines’ readiness for the digital era.

This initiative aligns with recent research demonstrating that UK residents tend to procrastinate on essential tasks, often assuming that operational status implies no immediate need for action.

Clare Balding emphasized, “When your provider reaches out, it is crucial to respond promptly to ensure uninterrupted landline services. Failure to do so may lead to service disruptions that you rely on.”

Customers are assured that they are likely to retain their current phone numbers, and expenses are expected to remain stable. Most households will simply need to connect their existing phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional copper wall sockets, with minimal need for engineer visits.

Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, cautioned, “Neglecting messages from service providers could disrupt vital connections. The shift to digital landlines represents a substantial upgrade to the UK’s communication infrastructure. Responding promptly will enable all to benefit from more dependable, secure technology and maintain connectivity to essential services.”

BT also emphasized the importance for customers with special requirements, such as telecare device users, to notify their providers promptly for tailored support.

Digital Voice, BT’s novel home phone service, eliminates copper connections by utilizing broadband technology, offering contemporary features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobiles.

The enhanced call quality of Digital Voice is expected to eliminate issues like crackling conversations, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance. Most households will experience no disruption in phone usage, as the cost of Digital Voice and broadband services is bundled in a single package price without additional charges for Digital Voice.
