Reform UK faces criticism for their handling of road maintenance after recent analysis revealed that Councils led by the party were the least efficient at repairing potholes. The Government’s new system for addressing potholes, using a traffic light rating, has highlighted that a significant number of Local Highway Authorities under Reform leadership have been marked with a ‘Red’ rating, indicating poor performance. The Department for Transport introduced a mapping tool that categorizes 154 local highway authorities as red, amber, or green based on road conditions and the utilization of government funding for road maintenance.
Out of the 12 Councils led by Reform, three – Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and West Northamptonshire – received a ‘Red’ rating. Similarly, Tory Councils were also found to be struggling with pothole repairs, with nearly 20% of their Councils receiving a ‘Red’ rating.
Anna Turley MP, Chair of the Labour Party, criticized Reform Councils for their poor performance in fixing potholes, stating that while Reform offers simplistic solutions, they fall short in delivering tangible results for drivers. The data was collected prior to Reform taking control of the local authorities and identified several areas classified as red, including Cumberland, Cumbria; Bolton, Greater Manchester; Leicestershire; Suffolk; and Kensington and Chelsea, west London. Red-rated authorities will receive support to improve their practices through a dedicated £300,000 program.
On the contrary, authorities like Essex, Wiltshire, Coventry, Leeds, and Darlington were rated as green for their effective road maintenance efforts. The Government has committed £7.3 billion for local road maintenance funding until 2029/30 to ensure better road conditions and reduced costs for drivers.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the government’s commitment to improving road conditions and reducing the financial burden on drivers due to poor road maintenance. Additionally, a spokesperson for Reform UK defended their efforts, highlighting their progress in addressing the pothole backlog inherited from previous administrations and their commitment to enhancing local highways services.
Overall, the report sheds light on the challenges and efforts in road maintenance, urging a collaborative approach to ensure safer and well-maintained roads for all motorists.
