Amazon has launched its own rapid grocery delivery service, promising deliveries in under 30 minutes. Customers can choose from a wide selection of groceries and household items, ranging from milk and eggs to diapers and medications.

This move by Amazon puts it in direct competition with supermarkets that already offer similar super-fast delivery services through partnerships with delivery companies. Last September, Amazon announced the closure of all its Amazon Fresh grocery stores, leading to the introduction of the new Amazon Now service.

Currently being tested in select postcodes in Southwark, London, Amazon Now utilizes bike delivery with plans for expansion in the near future. The company is recruiting riders through Amazon Flex, a program where riders are not directly employed by Amazon.

John Boumphrey, Amazon UK country manager, highlighted the convenience and speed of Amazon Now in a blog post on the company’s website. He emphasized the commitment to faster delivery, building on the already existing same or next-day delivery options available to customers across the UK.

Amazon’s decision to roll out its ultra-fast delivery service follows a partnership with Gopuff introduced last July. Prime members can benefit from discounted delivery fees starting at £1.99 per order, compared to £3.99 for non-Prime members. A flat £2 fee applies to all orders under £15, regardless of membership status. Prime members already enjoy quick and free delivery on millions of items in various categories.

The company stated that more details about the service will be shared in the coming months as Amazon strives to enhance the shopping experience for customers in the UK. Amazon’s focus on online delivery services was reinforced when it closed its 19 UK grocery stores in September, citing the significant growth opportunities in online delivery as a driving factor behind the decision.

Despite the closure of its physical stores, Amazon remains dedicated to expanding its online grocery and household essentials offering, which has seen substantial growth in the UK market. The launch of Amazon Now is not linked to the store closures, with Amazon asserting its commitment to serving customers through various channels to meet their preferences and needs.
