Tony Pigott, a former England cricketer, has passed away at the age of 67. Pigott, who achieved over 1,000 wickets in his professional career, died on Sunday.

The ex-Sussex seam bowler had a heart attack after successfully battling oesophageal cancer. Pigott was renowned for his performance in the County Championship and his sole appearance for the England team, which became a memorable moment in cricket history.

In 1984, the London-born star was called up late to join his country’s team for a Test match against New Zealand in Christchurch. Despite having his wedding scheduled during the series, Pigott decided to postpone it and traveled to New Zealand, where he managed to take two wickets.

Unfortunately, Pigott’s debut was not a dream come true as the hosts defeated England by an innings and 132 runs within three days at Lancaster Park. This marked the end of his international career.

At the county level, Pigott spent 18 years at Sussex before transferring to Surrey in 1994 due to recurring injuries, eventually becoming the second-team coach. In 1997, he returned to Sussex and later became the CEO after leading a successful takeover, contributing to the team’s County Championship victory in 2003.

Pigott also played a key role in installing floodlights at Hove, making it the first cricket ground in the UK with such facilities. He was affectionately nicknamed ‘Lester,’ possibly inspired by the famous jockey, Lester Piggott.

Tributes have poured in following Pigott’s demise. Former Sussex captain Chris Adams, whom Pigott signed from Derbyshire in 1998, expressed his deep appreciation for Pigott’s significant impact on the club’s history.

Adams highlighted Pigott’s positive influence on his life and the club, crediting him for his decision to join Sussex in 1998. He described Pigott as a lovable and optimistic individual who will be greatly missed.

Adams also shared a tribute on social media platform X, expressing sadness over Pigott’s passing and acknowledging his warm character that will be fondly remembered.

Former Sussex wicket-keeper and umpire Ian Gould also shared his sorrow on social media, describing Pigott as a remarkable personality.
