An inquest revealed that a husband, described as ‘jealous,’ committed a violent act when he suspected his wife of infidelity. Robert Jobson, aged 84, fatally shot his wife, Rosemary, aged 69, at their residence in Thornton Curtis, North Lincolnshire, where they operated a shooting school. The couple, known for representing England in shooting competitions, were tragically discovered deceased at their home on July 14, 2023.
Prior to the murder, Jobson had been arrested following a report by his wife to the police, stating he had assaulted her. The inquest disclosed that Mrs. Jobson was shot twice by her husband as she exited a vehicle outside their residence. Subsequently, Jobson took his own life in a shed on the property. The inquest also highlighted that the couple initially met while engaged in hunting and horseback riding before establishing the shooting school.
Concerns arose when Rosemary contacted authorities on June 20, 2023, expressing intentions to divorce Jobson and raising worries about firearms in their home. As a precaution, the guns were removed from the residence three days later. Despite being arrested by Humberside Police on July 8, Jobson was released on bail the following day under strict conditions not to approach or communicate with his wife. Jobson’s mental health struggles led to psychiatric assessments post-arrest.
During the inquest at Cleethorpes Town Hall, it was disclosed that Jobson suspected his wife of having an affair with their mutual friend, Peter Hrynyk, with whom she had vacationed. Hrynyk clarified during the proceedings that their relationship was purely platonic. Rosemary had briefly stayed with Hrynyk but returned home to collect belongings before the tragic incident. Autopsy results confirmed that her cause of death was gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
Jobson’s demise was attributed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his neck. Coroner Jayne Wilkes characterized the case as “particularly shocking,” determining that Rose’s death resulted from intentional actions by her husband, constituting an unlawful killing with elements of premeditation.
In a statement, Paula O’Donnell, Rosemary’s daughter from a previous marriage, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and regretted not being able to persuade her mother to leave Jobson. She described Rosemary as a caring individual, greatly missed for her kindness and selflessness.
