Many of us are unaware of the contents of our medicine cabinets and whether the products inside are still safe for use. Ensuring that your over-the-counter treatments are within their expiry dates is crucial for their effectiveness and safety.

Different medications and remedies in our medicine cabinets come with expiration dates. The NHS recommends a quarterly clear-out to maintain the potency of these products. Pharmacist Deborah Grayson stresses the importance of not using medications past their expiry date, as their effectiveness cannot be guaranteed, and they may pose risks like bacterial contamination.

As the popularity of medications like GLP-1 injections and HRT products increases, proper storage becomes essential. Creams, especially steroid ones, should be used within a few months of opening to prevent contamination. Pain medications like paracetamol and Ibuprofen are generally safe until their expiry date if stored in blister packs. Aspirin, particularly in bottles, can degrade quickly and should be discarded if it smells like vinegar.

GLP-1 injections need refrigeration, while HRT products should be stored below 25ºC. Cough mixtures, sugar-based medicines, and electrolytes also have specific guidelines for use and storage. Antiseptic wipes may dry out over time, and eye drops should be discarded after 28 days.

It’s crucial to regularly check the contents of your medicine cabinet for expired or ineffective products. Out-of-date items like vitamin C and antihistamines may lose their effectiveness but are unlikely to cause harm. Keeping track of expiration dates and proper storage conditions can ensure the safety and efficacy of your medications and treatments.
