Terrified individuals fled into the streets following back-to-back earthquakes that rattled homes and prompted evacuations.
The initial tremor, as per the Italian National Institute of Geophysics, struck at 9:27 am with a magnitude ranging between 4.0 and 4.5, originating in the Forlì-Cesena province of Italy. Shortly after, at 9:29 am, a second quake hit the Ravenna area, registering between 3.7 and 4.2 in magnitude.
Witnesses described the quakes lasting up to five seconds each, causing buildings to shake in Forli and forcing residents to evacuate onto the streets. The shallow depth of the earthquakes at 14 miles contributed to their widespread impact, although no injuries have been reported thus far.
Precautionary measures have been taken, with schools near the epicenter in Emilia-Romagna closing and evacuations being conducted. Residents, such as one individual from Faenza, shared their experiences on social media, recounting the intensity of the tremors and the swift response of authorities.
Valentina Palli, the mayor of Russi, emphasized the importance of remaining calm amidst ongoing investigations into the earthquakes’ effects. Similarly, Faenza’s mayor, Massimo Isola, reassured the public that no damages had been reported, commending the composed response of the community.
Reports indicate that the earthquake’s effects were felt as far as Milan, approximately 160 miles from the epicenter, causing only mild tremors. Train services have been temporarily suspended for safety inspections along various lines in Romagna.
A specialized team, led by Massimo Camprini at the Regional Operations Centre in Bologna, is spearheading the assessment efforts in coordination with emergency response units on the ground.
